The surroundings that you work in can be your best source of influence – being the main source of ideas and creativity. This all formed part of the reason why I would like to study architecture at the University of Manchester. The city has a beautiful cultural heritage and rich Victorian gothic buildings and this provides an ideal and unique environment for an undergraduate studying such an artistically driven course. The city is going through constant regeneration especially with the expansion of the Metro link as well as the new arts centre being introduced to the city, which are both attractive qualities that increase my determination to study at Manchester. There is no doubt that the collaboration with practicing architects is an appealing factor, as I am a strong believer in learning and seeking advice that can help to improve my work and refine my ideas. I think it’s great to experience architecture through different cultures and one way I hope to do this is by traveling, hence why I love that there are opportunities to study abroad , especially to Italy, which is known to be the founder of Renaissance architecture.
A review of a building I recently visited.
I recently visited The Lloyds building in London, designed by Richard Rodgers and by first glance I was shocked and impressed by the building’s complexity and modernity through the stainless steel facade. This was the first time I experienced high tech architecture and my thoughts instantly went to the fact that the building imitated a big metal machine, almost as if Rodgers was giving humanity a glimpse of architecture in the future. Visiting such an iconic landmark, opened my eyes to the idea that every architect portrays a unique style. The structural and functional elements of the building are made vulnerable as they are exposed on the exterior of the structure and he simply developed this technique in order to maximize space inside. I admire the fact that the design is daring and intricate and it reminded me that there is no limit as to how far architecture can be pushed.
My favourite architect.
In terms of pushing the limits of architecture, Antoni Gaudi is an example of an architect who created eclectic vibrant buildings, based on his love and interest for organic forms through natural objects. He is my favourite architect, because he manipulates colour and patterns through his flamboyant creations in order to unleash his freedom and creativity and in addition, show people a new side of architecture. The dynamic features in some of his work, for example ‘Casa Batllo’, encourages me to want to develop my own influences and unique style.
A work of architecture I would like to experience.
Upon my discovery of the Lloyds building, my proliferate interest in modernism increased and when i learned that Rodgers had designed another high tech building, i instantly discovered the Pompidou centre in Paris. Although, from pictures the design is not what i expected. Compared to the Lloyds building, the design is more radical and structurally expressive and it seems as if Rodgers wanted to emphasize the ‘skeletons’ through the exterior as he colour codes the ducts to illustrate their use. It is important to experience architectural buildings in person in order to get a sense of the scale, the atmosphere and get a closer look at the intricate details of the building , hence the reason why I would love to experience the structural building in France.
